A guide to freeware Solitaire card game collections for Windows

Solitaire (or patience) is a family of single-player card games. Known as "Patience" in British English and "Solitaire" in American English. Microsoft's Solitaire is the card game "Klondike".

Freeware: Legally obtainable software that you may use at no cost, monetary or otherwise, for as long as you wish. Definition as determined by the readers of alt.comp.freeware (a.c.f.)

Please note that I have not followed 100% the standard definition of freeware. This site include some abandonware, donationware, charityware, giftware, demos, and some non-intrusive, non-nagging 'lite' versions of commercial games

The Top Eight Collections

PySol icon

PySol Fan Club Edition 2.0

PySolFC is a fork of PySol and a great collection of 1061 games.

There are 722 games that use the 52 card International Pattern deck, 22 games for the 78 card Tarock deck, 20 games each for eight and ten suit Ganjifa games, 43 Hanafuda games, Matrix games, 200 tile-matching Mahjongg/Shisen-Sho games, 15 Trumps only games, and 19 games for an original hexadecimal-based deck.

PysolFC has a nice, modern look and feel and has multiple cardsets and tableau backgrounds. Sound, background music, unlimited undo & redo, load & save games, statistics, hint, demo games, and a solitaire wizard.

Among the supported card games are classics like Aces Up, Baker's Game, Canfield, FreeCell, Forty Thieves, Golf, Klondike, Pyramid, Scorpion, Spider, Yukon, and many more.

OpenSource (GNU/GPLv3) and written in Python (uses Ttk widget set). Main contributer/Author: Skomoroh. Latest version released in December 2009.

Patience 2.51

Excellent collection of solitaire with over 200 different games. It has high scores and statistics, unlimited undo/redo, save/open games, strict rules, sounds, and a lot of auto-move options. You can define your own background pictures, tiles, gradients and colour options.

Patience uses real-time card transformations. This allows games with rotated cards (such as The Clock and The Dial). 7 cardsets follows (modefied versions from Pysol). Patience indludes a Cardset creator program.

Req: Windows XP, Vista, 16 bit graphics, 800 x 600 resolution. Recommended:

Big Solitaires 3D v. 1.4

Big3DSol is a collection of 40 solitaire games with 3D - OpenGL rendering. It gives you a more realistic feeling since the 3D view imitates the view you may have at the card table (a top-down-ish view).

Card movement is smooth (but will depend on your grapgics card). It features camera movement, undo/redo, statistics and automatic on/off movements.

Alexei Solitaires Collection is a collection of 190 Solitaire games. All the usual favorite solitaire games, but also a lot of original solitaires. Card sizes scales depending on the size of the application window.

Sounds, statistics, save/open, unlimited undo/redo, multu-user mode, auto-movement ('quick cards'), supports 10 languages.

An editor is included. With it you can create new solitaire games, remove existing ones or modify them.

Solitude 1.52

Solitude is a good compilation of 91 solitaire card games. It's selection gives an good overview of the spectrum of of card-bases solitaire games there exists. The graphics may not be fancy, but the gameplay is strong. Undo, replay and statistics. Most games are designed for the screen resolutions of 640x480 and 800x600.

Wiz Solitaire 1.12

Wiz Solitaire is a collection of 15 solitaire card games. It strong points are the possibility it gives you to create your own decks and the ability to resize the cards from 54x80 to 176x260 (in total nine different card sizes). The default 'dragon' deck is beautiful and other people have made more than 20 high quality decks.

With the deck Editor you can use your own gif, jpg, bmp & wmf pictures to make a cardset. It can also use your own pictures as a background. Also support for rkp/reko cardsets.

AS-Solitaire is a nice Solitaire collection with 40 games. The game has a non-standard GUI (made in Blitz), but do not let that scare you away. It's well worth the little extra time to figure it out.

The game uses rkp/reko cardsets and the author is a very active cardset maker (visit the homepage often for new sets). You can also use your own pictures as background. Other features: Timer, highscore, solitaire rules.

It's main drawback is that it seems it's optimized for a screen resolution of 800x600 - no good on very large screens....

SoliLuxe 2.40

SoliLuxe have 150 solitaire gard games in a very beautiful setting. Sound, undo, redo, card animations and you can choose between 9 decks and 23 backgrounds.

Shareware ($6.95). But as they say: "Very Generous Shareware". All single-player game features works and all games are playable without time limitations. There is a nag message when you open the "Options" window and some feautures are grayed out (music and Deck Editor).

Author: Stanislav Glazyrin / FastSoft (2001). Originally shareware, later freeware. Earlier versions were named 'WinSolit'. The 'WinSolit' name is used throughout the game.

The installer does not work on my Vista/Win7 computers (it works on Win XP). The game also starts in Russian and forces you (in Russian) to create a playername / password and the standard interface is in Russian. The solution is to download this zip-file (2,2 mb) - no installation and English default language.

SolKan 4.0 icon

SolKan Solitaire 4.0

SolKan Solitaire have 198 different solitaire games. It's main strength is the ability to create many more games by using the customization dialogue boxes for Klondike, Spider, Golf and Forty Thieves. The game also automatically resize the cards according to which game you play (there are six different sizes) and your screen resolution.

You can also create your own cardsets (facecards and cardbacks) through editing the standard bitmap face card file [a slight problem here - look below]. Also customizable backgrounds. Strong automove and many ways to select and choose your type of game. Highscore, sound, undo (limited), rules. But the graphics are begin to show their age a bit.

Author: John Kanold (Canada). Made in 1999. "No-nag shareware", but site dead since 2004 and the game must be considered abandonware now. 16-bit application (req.: Win 3.1+).

A version claiming to be SolKan Solitaire 6.0 become available in 2011. I'm sceptical; on my PC I only got an error message and in the title it says v. 4.00. See screenshot.

The standard bitmap face card file to make your own cardsets are no longer available (I don't have it anymore - do you know someone who has it?). One solution is to download my Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) set and work from that one. 1,8 mb.

SolKan 3.0 (423 kb). Made in 1998 (130+ games). Some people have reported trouble with using their own cardsets in version 4.

There exists dozen of graphic modifications (or 'hacks') to the original Solitaire (Klondike) game that have been in Windows since v. 3.0 (Wes Cherry 1989).

Francisco J. Campos (Dominatrix) have made more than 30 customizations of the original WinSol with a variety of subjects. Quality? Some good, some awful (it's a learning process!).

Francisco have allowed me to offer several of his customizations for download here (themes: Occult, Ouija, Quiro, Robots and three pinups decks).
